Paracentesis for Acute Care Skills Lab
Abdominal paracentesis is a surgical puncture of the peritoneal cavity for aspiration of ascites. It is a safe and effective diagnostic and therapeutic procedure used in a variety of abdominal problems including, ascites, acute abdomen and peritonitis. Ascites may be recognized on physical examination indicated by abdominal distention, shifting dullness, and occasionally a palpable fluid wave.
